Hi. I'm just thinking about changing my reverb + dly setup. I use the
Alesis Q2 for reverbs mostly. I want to switch to Boss SE-70. My Q2 is
really transparent and I never had experience with SE-70.

Could you help me with that. I really don't want to degrade my tone in my
FX loop and I haven't (don't want to use that) any mixing stuff for that.

I saw that you use one channel mixer built in the looper. And I wonder,
do you use it for making parallel effects loop and mixing dry signal with
SE-70? Or do you use the SE-70 in series? And why do you use this mixer?

Is the SE-70 really transparent?

If you switch to the SE-70, you'll really need a mixer because your
dry sound through the SE-70 will be TERRIBLE. It will ruin your tone!

I use a one channel mixer, because I just run mono. The mixer is 100%
transparent and all my patches in the SE-70 have the direct (dry)
signal turned off, so the only thing coming out of the SE-70 is the
effect.

Some of the higher end effects like the Lexicon stuff is pretty
transparent and can be used without a mixer, but most of the cheap
stuff like the SE-70 really suck if you put your dry signal through
them.

Could you suggest me any low power tube amplifier for home use, or any
tips to obtain good sounds at home while practicing ? (I mean not for
recording)

I really am not an expert on new amps - sorry! The only thing I can
recommend is a Fender Deluxe - they're not that loud and sound pretty
good.

Is it possible with tubes or maybe digital effects like POD or even pedals
are better at home at low volume?

I use a pod to practice with, but I don't think they or any other amp
simulator sound as good as the real thing (yet)

What about power attenuator like THD Hot Plate

I tried a hot plate but it thinned out my tone, especially at lower settings.

Have you ever tried George L's cables? What do you think about them?

I tried George L cables - I thought they gave my tone a sweeter
top end, but the sound was a lot smaller, so I went back to Mogami
2524.

I have a strat from the 80's, I want to change the pick ups.

I would like to know which set (custom "fat 50's, custom '54 strat,
custom texas special, custom'69 strat, tex-mex, vintage noiseless pick ups)

sound close to the v60 low peak that you are using?

The best pickups (no hum) are the DiMarzio Virtual Vintage 2.2's -
they sound so much like John's V60's that I can hardly hear the
difference.

How loud does Scott play live?
How many springs are there on his tremelo?

I play pretty loud onstage, mainly because there's a wild ape on the drums.
Three stings in the vibrato

Do you use the SD9 both with the blues single coil guitar and the Tribal
Tech with humbucking guitar?
Does the SD9 have the same bass and mids as the tube screamer?

I use the SD9 for both. It has less mids than a Tube Screamer, so it
sound great for treble pickups. Try it with the volume all the way up, the
dist at 1-2 o'clock and the tone all the way down.

To boost the distortion channel of the amp the RC booster is better than
the AC Booster?
Are you used to use the RC booster with the humbucking guitar too?

The RC is a great boost to use with amps that have a lot of mids, since
the RC is kind of scooped sounding. If it's a Fender sounding amp, the MXR
micro amp is a good boost, or the Divided By 13 Dyna-Ranger. The AC Booster
has too much gain for the distortion channel of my amp.

Which differences do you find between the SD9 and the DS1 Pro both modified
by AnalogMan? What do you like more about the SD9 in respect to the other
one?

The DS-1 sounds thin to me. The SD-9 is much fatter. I turn the volume

all the way up, the distortion at about 2 o'clock and the tone all the way off.

How does Scott maintains his nut on his guitar. What does he use to lube it?

I use graphite powder. It comes in a tube and many different
companies make it. You can find it in any hardware store.

Scott mentioned that sometimes he uses the overdrive channel of his
OD-100 amp for solos, other times he front-ends the clean channel with
pedals - does the amp have one input and if so how does he coordinate
channel switching with the pedals?

I use the Bradshaw switching system which can switch channels on the amp
and turn pedals on and off at the same time. Actually the pedals are always
on and the switcher turns the pedal loops on and off.

With his amp settings, and the fact that he uses mainly Celestion
speakers, and the gain on his clean channel is set to 10, how is he able to
get his very Fendery clean sounds?

Channel 1 on the OD-100 is pretty clean with single coils, even with the
boost on and the volume all the way up - it's still clean enough for
chords. To boost that channel further into the slightly overdriven type
sound I use the MXR micro amp, and then to take it a step further into the
Stevie sound I use the TS-9.

Can you describe which pedal of the Voodoo-1 and the TS-9 most forms your

sound in i.e. "Dog Party"?
I really like your fat and singing tone so I would like to buy a Voodoo-1, TS-9 or

a TS-808. But I can't afford two pedals right now so if you just want to name

which of the two pedals that most brings out your characteristic sound.

The best pedal for a good "high gain" distortion is the Ibanez
SD9. There are two versions, one with one circuit board and one with two
circuit boards. The two board version is better. I set the output all the
way up and the dist at around 1 o' clock. I keep the tone very low around 8
o' clock.

Wich patch cables/instrument cables do you use? What do you think about
fatsoflex from spectraflex?

I use Mogami 2524 cable. I've never heard anything from spectraflex.

Do you use always the compressor pedal. if not-for which combinations.
How do you make it with compressor when you make records? Take it from studio
compressors?

I don't use a compressor pedal or any compression for my live gigs or
recording - I never have, except for one tour when I used a Boss CS-2 just
to boost my clean sound. Now I use an MXR micro amp for that. I might put a
compressor on some tracks while mixing - Mike Landau has "Distressors"
which can fatten up a guitar track pretty nice. He used it sometimes if he
thought the track needed it.

What do you think about the new dual rectifier from boogie? I play one
with the g-force and some pedals and a switcher from voodoo lab, pretty
punchy.

I haven't heard any of the new Boogie stuff

Do you like the boss ce-2? Do you use it more for clean sounds or dist.?
What are your setups on it?

I use the CE-2 live with the rate at 12 o'clock and the depth at 3 o'clock.
Only for clean.

Which part of Scott signal path is controlled by volume knob. Is it
before dist pedals or after?

My volume knob is in the amp FX loop, so it's after the pedals and the
preamp. That way I can change my volume without affecting the amount of
gain.

I own an old fender bandmaster...

I read that scott uses it too.. Can you tell me in what setup and if the head
as been modified?

My bandmaster is modded by Alexander Dumble - I bought the amp
for 300 dollars but unfortunately the mod was 2000. It was worth it, but
it's really not a Bandmaster anymore. I think the transformer and the wood
box is the only original parts that he kept.

Which pedal are you using to boost the tube screamer in order to obtain
more gain? How do you set the tube screamer?

Have you ever tried the TS9 Silver with the Analog man BD2 Super?
And what about the BD2 super by itself?

I use the Roger Mayer Voodoo 1 after the tube screamer
with the gain off and volume all the way up. I run my TS-9 Silver Mod with
the gain about 2 o' clock and the volume all the way up. I don't know the
BD2 Super - I never heard of it - I'll check his site.

On what tracks on the CD Well to the bone did Scott play on
the CAE OD-100 and what cabinet did he use?

Sultan's Boogie was 100% the OD-100, but there are several
tunes where I recorded the OD-100 on the left and the Bandmaster on the
right. Those songs are Ashes and Devil Boy. The solo on Hillbilly is all
OD-100 and so are all the delay swell sounds in Rituals. I always used a
4x12 cab with 25 watt Greenbacks with the OD-100 and a 4x10 cab with
Kendrick Blackframes with the Bandmaster.

What's the guitar do you play for Tribal Tech?
Only Candy Purple? Do you still play with Black cherry?

I only play the Purple guitar with Tribal Tech.
I only used the black cherry ones on one song on Rocket Science and never
used it much live. It was too light in weight and had too much midrange for
me.

With old amplifiers like plexi's if you want to obtain a lead distortion
you have to use a boost pedal in front of it. In This case I remember you
used to play with the freddy fuzz with your amp. Is that a good boost pedal?
there is another boost pedal to use with old plexi you can suggest me?

Freddy Fuzz is OK but the best distortion sound with a plexi Marshall is
the Beano pedal (which is available at Analogman.com), or the old DOD
Overdrive 250 pedal (the gray one, which is what Yngwie uses), or the old
MXR micro amp.
My favorite is the Beano

I was wondering if you know wich pickups scott uses on his red blues strat???

They're Suhr V60 low peak single coil pickups, and it's a
matched set, which means they're all wound the same. John makes a set where
he winds the treble pickup hotter, but I think it makes the treble pickup
too midrangy. So to get a volume balance, I set my pickups so that the
treble pickup is up high and my rythm pickup is about 1/8 inch lower.

Do you use SE-70 algorythm is 81.Rev+Delay(standard)?

Yes, that's the correct SE-70 patch

And what amp is the best do you think for Tribal Tech Sounds?

One of the better amps out there is the Bogner Ubershall

Has the Xotic AC Booster replaced the SilverMod TS in Scott's rack?

I still use the TS-9 with the silver mod - I'm only using the AC
Booster when I record with humbucking pickups.

What is your SE 70 used for?

My SE 70 is used for delay and reverb. I use a dark reverb (Hall) with a 2 second decay,
and a 400 ms delay with feedback on 15. There's a algorythm for "Delay and
Reverb" in the SE 70 so you can have both at once.

Where is the mic located in front of the cabinet?

I usually put the mic right in the seam of the cone and
the paper - about an inch away from the grillcloth of the cabinet. If I
want more mids I move it a little away from the cone, but always moving
toward the side of the cabinet, not towards the middle.

Do you know what sequence Scott has his boxes set up in the looper?

Octavia first, TS-9 then Voodoo, then the rest. Basically, it's dist pedals
before color pedals like chorus. The wah is after the dist pedals. All the
pedals are before the amp.
Most people put the wah after the distortion pedals (me too), but you can
do it the other way too.

The Octafuzz is always used alone, and the settings are volume up almost all the way and
fuzz all the way down. The placement in the chain doesn't matter since it's not
used with other pedals.
By the way, the location of the pedals in the drawer doesn't have anything
to do with where they sit in the chain, since they're plugged into whatever
loop you want in the back of the rack.

The SE 70 is in the amp effects loop

I imagine that the 4 (total) send/return guitar cables from the
mixer, SE-70, and the one from the FX loop send jack must add up to a
considerable total length (unless the pedal board is very close to amp)
and I was wondering what (if any) influence that has on his tone?  The
longer the cables the more it messes with impedance I think, at least I've
noticed that for my bass guitars

The first thing I plug into is a buffer - after that you can have a million
feet of cable and it won't matter.

What are the bottom four switches on the pedal board?

They're presets so you can program different combos of pedals or midi
patches.
There are 24 banks of 4.
